Day 5: Developing as a Future Professional Nurse

Through this experience, I feel that I am becoming a more compassionate and adaptable nurse. Working in a setting with limited supplies has helped me develop a deeper appreciation for patient care and the importance of staying focused on the patient’s needs regardless of the circumstances. Even with limited resources, I made sure to treat every patient with respect and compassion. Today I worked in triage and also served as a runner. Although it was challenging at times, I wanted to make sure that patients were seen by a doctor before they had to leave, which motivated me to keep working hard. I felt most confident when I was placed in triage. Initially I thought it would be straightforward since I would be taking vital signs, but I realized that I needed to take blood pressure manually, which is something I had not done in a while. At first I felt unsure, but I reminded myself that this is a skill I have practiced many times before. By staying calm and focused, I was able to perform it successfully and regain my confidence. I practiced integrity and accountability by being honest with patients when I did not know the answer to a question and encouraging them to speak directly with the doctor for more accurate information. I also remained responsible for my role by making sure all of my assigned patients had their vital signs taken before leaving my station. An ethical concept I noticed during this experience was nonmaleficence and respect for patient autonomy. Even though the community does not often have access to these types of healthcare services, patients were still given the choice to accept or decline care. Additionally, because resources were limited, the team took precautions to prevent harm, such as properly cleaning equipment after dental procedures before using it again. One leadership quality that stood out to me was demonstrated by Francisco. He consistently stepped in to help wherever he was needed and made sure that if he could not assist directly, he would find someone who could. His willingness to support the team and ensure that patients received care showed strong leadership and dedication to the mission.

  1. I love your pictures, I definitely think you have grown during this experience in many ways like you said. I agree the staff, nurses, doctors and dentists do the best they can to prevent infection and not harm patients while also respecting and caring for them.
